<p>In a post earlier this month on the HR Examiner, John Sumser tells us that <a href="http://www.hrexaminer.com/mobile-recruiting-really" target="_blank">he doesn’t really think mobile recruiting is a thing</a>.</p>
<p>And I suppose in the limited way he conceived it, writing and reviewing resumes on a smartphone, would only result in “a flood of ill considered applications that are [low-quality]. Cover letters would have to include apologies for the implicit typos…. All things considered, the only thing a Recruiter can reasonably do with her phone is answer some email.”</p>
<p>That could be true for recruiters who are only accepting candidate applications that follow the dated cover-letter-and-resume package, emailed to the jobs@yourcompany email address, or recruiters who limit themselves to candidates who have the time to work through a complex application form so his or her results show up in your complex Boolean search results.</p>
<p>Problem is, the best candidates aren’t doing those things, no matter what size their screen and whether they’re at a desk or on the road.</p>
<p>The best candidates are busy! And they’re not actively looking for work. But thanks to this brave new world of technology, their data is available everywhere.</p>
<ul>
<li>They’ve already got employment and education history as part of their LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google profiles.</li>
<li>They’re blogging and tweeting about their experiences, and with a focus on finding work that lines up with one’s passion, they’re probably sharing things that demonstrate their expertise in your field.</li>
<li>They’re hearing about jobs from others in their network on their mobile devices, and applying to companies with one click, using resume information that’s already out there (see point 1).</li>
<li>They may not be actively looking for new jobs, but are aware that jobs come and go, and are replying to recruiters who are savvy enough to start a conversation with them on channels like Twitter or Google+, and using their mobile devices to forward detailed resumes they have stored and ready to go in places like Dropbox or SugarSync (which John mentions he uses).</li>
<li>They live in a fast-paced world, and may have had a conversation, two interviews and an accepted offer from a recruiter who’s using mobile channels to find passive candidates and is savvy about making their application process mobile-friendly, by the time you’ve figured out which Boolean string will finally deliver the resumes of the candidates you need.</li>
</ul>
<p>Or you could continue to believe that the tiny, powerful computers we all carry around in our pockets now are only good for email and phone calls.</p>
